Activision and Rovio are teaming up to bring the extremely popular game Angry Birds to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo 3DS consoles.

Originally just an app for the iPhone and iPod touch, Angry Birds has seen incredible growth since its release in December 2009, expanding to practically all mobile operating systems, in-browser and desktop apps, a Facebook application, countless merchandise, an animated TV series and movie in the works, books, and even a theme park.

Somehow, amid this never-ending sprawl, Rovio, the game’s developer, has found the time to work on a new game for three popular consoles.

Angry Birds Trilogy

Angry Birds Trilogy is expected for release in December this year and will feature a trio of furious fowl capers, combining the original Angry Birds, Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds Seasons.

Speaking to IGN, Rovio’s executive vice-president of games Petri Järvilehto called the console game “the ultimate collector’s edition”.

“We believe that there are a lot of people on the consoles who appreciate a great casual game play experience,” he said. “This is a game that resonates across a wide audience on many platforms.”

New platforms, new features

The console game will feature more than 290 levels with individual leaderboards, and will receive regular free updates. Developed from the ground up with HDTVs in mind, taking the game’s graphics to the big screen means higher resolution, plus animated, reactive backgrounds and lighting modes.

The features of each console have also been considered in the game’s development, and users can expect support for Xbox 360’s Kinect, PlayStation Move and StreetPass for the 3DS.
