Spool, a mobile content bookmarking company, is shutting up shop in order to partner with the world’s biggest social network, Facebook.
“We are proud to announce that today we will be pursuing our vision as a part of Facebook,” the Spool team said in a blog post on Saturday.
Spool was an app similar to Instapaper that allowed users to bookmark content for later, offline viewing. Not only did the app parse web pages and articles, though, it also stored audio and video content.
The San Francisco-based company raised US$1m in funding earlier this year, but it will now close down and become a part of Facebook.
The company has not been completely acquired by Facebook, but its talented team is set to join forces with the social network, which is likely to integrate these tools in order to optimise its mobile web service.
AllThingsD quotes Facebook’s statement as saying, “The Spool team has deep expertise in mobile software development and a passion for making content easy to consume. We’re excited for the team to join and accelerate their vision at Facebook.”
Spool users are advised to take action in order to retain their bookmarks, and the team has provided instructions on how to do so by importing them to another service.
