Viber 2.2 offers group messaging, improved call quality and a customisable look

Version 2.2 of Viber, the popular communication app with more than 90m registered users, now lets users customise the app’s look and send group messages quickly and easily.

Available now for Android and iOS, Viber 2.2 lets users add a profile photo and assign a display name to their accounts for other Viber users. Users can also make their message screens a bit livelier by adding a custom background.

The new group messaging service is a particularly welcome feature, allowing users to communicate with up to 15 contacts at once. Profile images and display names are used in these message screens in order to avoid confusion.

A smart notification feature limits new message alerts, meaning users involved in a group chat don’t receive a barrage of updates every time a new message is added.

Viber 2.2 also comes with a HD voice engine, which means better quality and more reliable calls.

Android users will also see nine new languages available: Arabic, Chinese (simplified and traditional), French, German, Hebrew, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

Beta apps for BlackBerry and Windows Phone have been released and Viber says it is working hard on support for Jelly Bean (Android 4.1).
