#London2012 – Google hits the target with another Olympic-themed Doodle

28 Jul 2012

The Games of the XXX Olympiad have officially begun, kicked off in style with an opening ceremony directed by Danny Boyle last night. And it seems that Google is as much a sports fan as the rest of the world right now, with a second Olympic-themed Doodle unveiled this morning.

Yesterday, we saw Google mark the start of the Olympics with a Doodle representing a variety of sports, from football to fencing. Today, archery was put in the spotlight, with a similarly styled illustration.

This could be Google’s way of honouring the South Korean archery team, who broke world records on the opening day of the games.

Im Dong-hyun was the first athlete to break a world record at London 2012 – though he may not be the last. In the individual ranking round of the men’s archery tournament yesterday, he broke his own 72-arrow mark of 696 by three points.

Accompanied by Kim Bubmin and Oh Jin-hyek on the South Korean men’s team, a second world record was smashed when the three registered a 216-arrow total of 2.087 – 18 points beyond the previous record.

South Korea is also the favourite for the women’s archery tournament, with world No 2 Bo Be Ki topping the individual rankings. Surprisingly, the world No 1 ranked female archer, Deepika Kumair from India, reached only eight place in the rankings, and the world No 3 Yuting Fang placed 25th.

The last-16 stage of the archery tournament began this morning at Lord’s Cricket Ground, with the quarter-finals taking place at 3pm this afternoon. The team medals will be decide on Sunday, and individual knockouts will start on Monday, and the finals on Thursday
