Angry Birds hijack NASA’s Curiosity rover (video)

In Red Planet, the latest episode in Angry Birds Space, Rovio’s kamikaze birds shoot off to Mars for an adventure involving the Curiosity rover. Now we know curiosity killed the cat, but can it help the birds kill the pigs?

The launch of Angry Birds Space earlier this year was supported through a partnership with NASA to introduce gamers to the concepts of microgravity. Now, NASA is using the game to teach people about the Mars exploration mission.

“Rovio is teaching huge new audiences about NASA’s missions to Mars thanks to this collaboration,” said David Weaver, associate administrator for communications at NASA headquarters in Washington. “It’s a great way to introduce both kids and adults to the wonders of the planet in a fun and entertaining way.”

The new episode promises new challenges across 20 levels. Players will need to dodge explosive volcanoes, fire asteroids and defeat the new astronaut pig. There are also three hidden rovers and landers to find, which will open up special bonus levels. The game will also include links to web content from NASA about the exploration mission.

Red Planet for Angry Birds Space is now available on iOS and Android, coming to other platforms soon.
