Flight of the Conchords gathering some inspired lyrics

We take a look at some of the most-viewed and most-shared videos on the web. This week features Flight of the Conchords doing their bit for CureKids, trying to quench the Sun, Orbital and Prof Stephen Hawking collaborating for the Paralympic opening ceremony and one of the greatest beer comercials you will see this year.

More than 72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute, 500 years of video watched on Facebook every day, and more than 700 YouTube videos shared on Twitter each minute, ensuring there is always video trending on the web.

With so much video available for viewing, we take a look at some of the viral videos that have caught our eye this week.

Flight of the Conchords – Feel Inside (and stuff like that)

If you needed to raise a million and a hundred and ten and twenty-one dollars (watch the video and you’ll understand) for CureKids then it is probably a good idea to get New Zealand’s fourth most popular folk-comedy duo involved. Everyone’s favourite kiwis Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords team up with some of New Zealand’s most popular recording artists to record a song with lyrics inspired by school kids from Auckland.

Guns in Space

We’re big fans of the VSauce team here at Siliconrepublic, and understandably so. Proving once again that science can be fun, the guys tackle some of the big questions about the galaxy this week, mostly: how much water would it take to put out the Sun?

Orbital – Where Is It Going? – Paralympics

Artistic director Kevin Finnan has drawn plaudits this week following the successful production for the Paralympics opening ceremony. The centrepiece of the event was the Higgs Boson celebration introduced by Prof Stephen Hawking and British electronic duo Orbital.

Complete MSL Curiosity Descent Interpolated HD

Three weeks ago we included a clip in the Viral videos of the week of NASA’s Curiosity rover making its decent to the surface of Mars. The footage shot at 4 frames per second was a fairly low-res affair. Thankfully, YouTube user Dominic Muller this week uploaded a HD 25 frames per second version which truely captures the historical event.

Carlton Draught – Beer Chase

In a throwback to the “cop shows” of the 1970s this beer commercial hit the web this week, courtesy of self-proclaimed “kings of viral marketing” Carlton & United Beverages. Having seen success among the online community with other viral efforts, the video hits all the right notes in trying to replicate previous success.
