Twitter users document Hurricane Sandy in photos

Twitter users have been sharing photos of their battered surroundings after Hurricane Sandy lashed wind and rain on the eastern United States and further up into Canada.

Sixteen people are dead as a result of Hurricane Sandy and at least 6m homes are without electricity. Streets and subways throughout New York are flooded and US President Barack Obama has declared a “major disaster” has hit the city.

Internet search giant Google has sprung into action by making its new Public Alerts available earlier than planned.

The storm has also knocked several digital media sites offline, as well, such as The Huffington Post, Gawker, Buzzfeed and others, leading them to adopt alternative measures, such as using Tumblr.
