YouTube Rewind 2012 recaps the year in online video (video)

18 Dec 2012

YouTube’s retrospective on the year stars some of 2012’s biggest viral hits – including the biggest of them all – while an interactive timeline allows users to look back at the year through online video.

YouTube Rewind 2012 can be accessed by clicking the YouTube logo which has been adapted in tribute to the site’s biggest star this year, PSY. The video features YouTube stars Felicia Day, Jenna Marbles, Walk off the Earth, Real Annoying Orange, Graydon Sheppard of Shit Girls Say fame and, of course, PSY himself depicting the culturally defining moments shared on the video network this year.

The video is packed with references to what was popular on YouTube throughout the year (and if you spot them all you’re probably spending too much time watching videos online), soundtracked by a Gangnam Style and Call Me Maybe mash up.

A dedicated YouTube Rewind 2012 channel has also been set up and contains the top trending videos per region. In UK and Ireland, this includes Kony 2012, memorable auditions for The X Factor, Caine’s arcade, new videos from One Direction, The Dictator’s spell on the red carpet, and the year’s biggest movie trailers.

There’s also a 15-minute interactive timeline video that users can use to track the trends throughout the year.
