Cmdr Chris Hadfield readies the ingredients for a honey and peanut butter tortilla while in orbit aboard the International Space Station

Cmdr Chris Hadfield, who recently tweeted a photo of Dublin at night from the International Space Station along with a message in Irish, now has a ‘cooking in space’ show on YouTube.

In the new episode of Chris’ Kitchen, Canadian astronaut Hadfield, who has been aboard the ISS since December, puts together a snack – a tortilla filled with honey and peanut butter.

“For sandwiches, we substituted bread for tortillas – here, crumbs just float away,” Hadfield explains.

“Our tortillas are packaged and last for 18 months.”

In the video, Hadfield says astronauts in orbit now have all kinds of things that can be eaten on Earth, an improvement over food that was mostly squeezed out of tubes in the early days of space exploration.

Hadfield also shows viewers how velcro is used to keep a jar of honey from floating off in a zero-gravity environment.

The video is among the latest content Hadfield has been sharing via his Twitter account.

Earlier this week, he photographed Dublin from the ISS and shared it with his nearly quarter of a million Twitter followers with the first message tweeted from space in Irish: “Tá Éire fíorálainn!” (Ireland is exquisite).

So far, the photo has been retweeted 4,780 times and favourited 2,118 times.

In response, Hadfield tweeted, “Wow, I can feel the warmth of the Irish all the way up here – go raibh maith agaibh (thank you)! I’ll do my best to photo more cities as clouds clear.”

Hadfield has a daughter who is a student in Dublin.

His mission aboard the outpost that orbits Earth every 92 minutes at 8 km/s is to last until mid-May.
