CUCKOO, an Irish web series originally produced as part of the RTÉ Storyland competition is now in the final five shortlisted for the prestigious People’s Choice Award at the Webbys. It is up against four other teams, including The Walking Dead and actor Tom Hanks’ new animation project Electric City.

The Webby Awards are considered the Oscars of the internet world and to date CUCKOO has received thousands of supporters, but needs another 5,000 votes to overcome Hanks.

Online voting for the Webby People’s Voice Awards goes on until 25 April. CUCKOO fans can vote at online (go to the Online Film & Video section and scroll down to Drama).

CUCKOO was directed by Danann Breathnach and written by Nikki Racklin and Danann Breathnach, from an original story by Racklin. It was produced by Marie Caffrey at Zanzibar Films, and stars Pagan McGrath as wild teenager Niamh Keegan, who recognises herself in a digitally ‘aged’ picture of a missing child. Also appearing are IFTA winner Denise McCormack (Love/Hate) and Brian Fortune (Game of Thrones).

However, the stakes are high: Walking Dead has more than 16m Facebook fans and Hanks has more than 6m Twitter fans.

“Currently we are in third place,” said Caffrey. “It’s not often we find such a a small Irish team up against such Hollywood elite and I owe it to my cast, crew and CUCKOO fans to do the best I can to push and look for support.”
