Facebook’s new Timeline features include fitness, content ratings and music discovery

15 May 2013

Following on from the launch of new Timeline sections in March such as Movies, Books and TV Shows, social network Facebook has now added the ability for users to rate their favourite content, add fitness scores and discover new music.

The new content ratings system allows users to not only select their favourite movies, books and TV shows, but Facebook has integrated the system with Netflix, Rotten Tomatoes and Goodreads, making recommendations all the more sharable.

As well as rating content, Facebook has added a new music discovery feature that allows users to play songs liked by their friends on music apps like Rdio, Deezer and Spotify.

Facebook revealed that to date, more than 17bn songs have been added to people’s Music sections through likes and listening activity from apps.

The social network has also added a new Fitness section to let users track workouts and stay motivated by combining running and cycling statistics from various fitness apps like Strava, Runtastic, Endomondo and Nike+.

As well as the new generic sections, Facebook has also developed a tool to allow app developers to build their own custom sections and add them to Timeline.

For example, OpenTable created a custom app section for foodies to share the restaurants that they like and recently dined at.

Game developers are also taking advantage of custom app sections in addition to the Games section. The hidden objects game Pearl’s Peril uses beautiful images to display the levels that a player has recently completed.

Facebook has also expanded App Insights to include analytics on Timeline section impressions and referral clicks to a developer’s app.
