WhatsApp records 64bn messages sent in one day

WhatsApp has reached the milestone of 64bn messages sent through the app in one average day last week.

Facebook will no doubt be rubbing its hands with glee as its newly purchased service has become the most dominant messaging service on the planet.

WhatsApp revealed the milestone on its Twitter page, telling its 1.79m followers “new daily record: 20B messages sent (inbound) and 44B messages received (outbound) by our users = 64B messages handled in just 24 hours.”

The company’s previous record was announced on New Year’s Day this year, which said its estimated 450m-plus users sent 18bn messages and received 36bn, totalling 54bn in one day.

However, WhatsApp has stated the 64bn figure is slightly misleading, as the number also takes into account messages sent to a group as an individual message to each person but the figure is still a testament to the popularity and daily use of the messaging app.

All eyes are now on Facebook and whether it will make any changes to the service, which Facebook felt was worth the roughly US$16bn it paid for WhatsApp back in February.
