Manchester United fires manager David Moyes (memes)

The owners of Manchester United Football Club have fired team manager David Moyes this morning, less than a year into his stg£4m-a-year, six-year contract and after a poor track record with the club.

“Manchester United has announced that David Moyes has left the Club,” reads a statement on the club website.

“The Club would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role.”

Moyes is likely to receive compensation of one year’s salary, with key performance targets having been missed in what The Telegraph deemed “United’s worst campaign for almost a quarter of a century”.

Moyes’ dismissal follows United’s 2-0 defeat – the team’s 11th loss of the season – at Everton on Sunday, resulting in their failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

United have yet to actively pursue a replacement for Moyes, The Telegraph reported. Manchester United player Ryan Giggs, with manager of the Manchester United reserve team Nicky Butt as his assistant, will take over as caretaker manager of the team until the end of the season.

News of Moyes’ dismissal has resulted in a flurry of activity on Twitter, with #Moyes now trending on the microblogging site and memes populating the web:
