Facebook stickers in comments on the Android mobile app

Replies to your Facebook posts are about to get littered with cute icons and animated graphics as Facebook introduces stickers on all comments.

Product engineer Bob Baldwin announced via his own Facebook page yesterday that stickers are coming to comments on the social network.

Facebook Messenger users will already be familiar with the graphics that serve as large-sized emojis in instant messages. Different collections can be downloaded, including promotional ones, such as the minions from Despicable Me, or well-known internet characters such as Pusheen.

To add stickers to a comment, users can simply tap or click the smiley-face icon in the bottom-right of the comment box, select a sticker and send.

Hacking Facebook comments better

The addition of stickers to comments started as a hackathon project by Baldwin and Kwame Thomison. A prototype was built in one night and the response from fellow Facebook employees was encouraging.

The prototype build was further developed for mobile web at another hackathon, followed by versions for the iOS and Android apps.

Baldwin’s focus has been on making Facebook comments more vibrant, as previous hacks of his involved adding emojis and then the option to upload photos.

Perhaps the most exciting element of this latest feature is the fact some stickers are animated, which could do a lot to appease those who have been crying out for GIF support on Facebook.

The addition of stickers to comments is planned to roll out worldwide within a day or so, though it’s clear from the comments on Baldwin’s post that it has already gained momentum.
