Facebook launches ‘Lite’ app for low-end Android phones

26 Jan 2015

Facebook is testing a new ‘Lite’ version of its Android app specially tailored for low-end mobile devices in emerging markets.

As reported by Tech Crunch, ‘Facebook Lite’ is a simplified version of social network’s 2009-era mobile website.

At just 252 KB in size, the app has been designed for 2G networks and areas with limited network connectivity. It was quietly released over the weekend and is currently available via the Google Play store in Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is currently championing the Internet.org movement to raise economic fortunes across the earth by making the internet available to everyone.

The project intends to connect the entire world to the internet through various means that could bring the web to some of the most remote places on the planet.
