Earth Day went off with a bang, Calbuco volcano erupted (photos)

23 Apr 2015

Chile’s Calbuco volcano really celebrated Earth Day in style, erupting without warning for the first time in 42 years, chucking mounds of ash and beautiful horror as far as the eye could see.

A red alert was issued by Chile’s Onemi emergency office straight away, ordering the evacuation of anyone within 20km.

The volcano is about 1,000km from Santiago, and thanks to Twitter we have some truly stunning images and videos  of the eruption emerging.

Thankfully there have been no reports of any injuries, meaning the evacuation has gone smoothly so far.

Here is a cool timelapse of the eruption and some of Twitter’s best images. What an Earth Day.
