Intel reveals branding for next-generation chips

11.08.2008
Microprocessor giant Intel said today that next-generation desktop chips – until now codenamed ‘Nehalmen’ – will be branded ‘Intel Core processor’.

The first new products off the production line, including an ‘Extreme Edition’, will be branded ‘Intel Core i7 processor’ – and will be the first of seven new product lines to launch in the coming year.

“The core name is and will be our flagship PC processor brand going forward,” said Sean Maloney, Intel Corporation executive vice-president and general manager, sales and marketing group.

“Expect Intel to focus even more marketing resources around that name and the Core i7 products, starting now,” Maloney added.

Initial products based on the new microarchitecture are expected to enter production in the fourth quarter and will feature Intel hyper-threading technology capable of handling eight software threads on four processor cores.

The new core products will extend beyond desktops to include mobile and server market segments.

The Intel Core i7 processor brand logo will be available for high-performance desktop PCs in blue with a separate black logo for ‘Extreme Edition’ PCs.

Intel said it will include processor model numbers to differentiate each chip.
