Some 250 jobs are looking vulnerable at the Tyco Safety Products plant in Bishopstown, Co Cork today amid rumours it will close and move to Central America, according to reports.
Tyco has been carrying out a global review of its manufacturing operations for some time now and plans may be coming on stream to move the Bishopstown operation to a new plant in Mexico as soon as it is built.
The Cork facility previously employed 475 people at Bishopstown before scaling down in 2005. In 2007 it let 178 employees go from its Shannon facility, keeping on 20 to carry out research and development.
Parent of Tyco Safety Products, Tyco International, has 38 manufacturing facilities worldwide and more than 10,000 employees. Its businesses design, manufacture and sell products across three key platforms: electronic security, life safety and fire suppression.
With 2007 revenues of more than US$3bn, Tyco’s product lines comprise access control, video management systems, intrusion security, electronic fire detection, electronic article surviellance, RFID, breathing apparatuses and chemical and water fire suppression solutions.
