O2 confirms iPhone 3G to be available pay-as-you-go

O2 has confirmed that in a matter of weeks it will release the much sought after iPhone 3G to the marketplace on a pre-pay tariff. The company also revealed that supply problems have eased up and from this week the devices will be available in greater numbers.

“We’re working on it at the moment and hope to make it available to pre-pay customers in a couple of weeks,” a spokesman for O2 Ireland told siliconrepublic.com.

The spokesman also confirmed that a greater supply of the iPhone devices will be available in the Irish market as of this week. When the device launched in Ireland on 11 July last, it was rumoured that only small numbers – in some cases less than a dozen – were available in most O2 stores.

“In terms of the stock issue, from this week we expect to see a more regular flow of stock. You’ll see a better supply and greater availability.”

In the UK, O2 has confirmed 16 September as the date that the iPhone 3G will be available on a pay-as-you-go basis.

The 8GB version of the iPhone 3G will retail for £350 sterling (€431) and will include a year’s free internet browsing, after which buyers will have to pay £10 sterling a month for internet access.

To purchase the iPhone 3G in the Irish market at present on a contract basis, the 8GB iPhone 3G costs €49 on the €100 monthly iPhone tariff, €99 on the €65 tariff and €169 on the €45 tariff.
