As Google rolls out more functionality on Google Sync today, this will now include the ability to add Gmail Contacts and Google Calendar to your iPhone, Windows Mobile or Nokia S60 Symbian device.
Interestingly, Google has developed this push Gmail feature for the iPhone through Microsoft Exchange technology. (Note: Google Sync is only supported on iPhone OS versions 3.0 and above).
“Having an over-the-air, always-on connection means that your inbox is up to date, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. Sync works with your phone’s native email application so there’s no additional software needed,” said Douglas Gresham, Software Engineer, Google Mobile on the official Google Mobile Blog.
This means that Gmail contacts will be synced with your iPhone, Windows Mobile or S60 address book and all Gmail messages and calendar events will be pushed directly to your phone.
However, there is the option to pick and choose whether you want Gmail, Contacts or Calendar-only synced.
You can set up your phone via http://m.google.com/sync but be aware that if you already have a Microsoft ActiveSync account set up on your iPhone you cannot configure a second.
