Toyota may recall Prius hybrids over brake problem

Car maker Toyota is planning to recall hundreds of thousands of Prius hybrids from around the globe over a brake problem, the Kyodo news agency reported.

The recall will affect cars that went on sale from May 2009-January 2010.

Toyota will reportedly notify authorities in Japan and the US of its plan, which will cover more than 270,000 of the gas-electric vehicles sold in the two countries, Kyodo said.

Toyota spokeswoman Ririko Takeuchi said no decision on a Prius recall has been made and Kenji Sugai, an official in Japan’s Transport Ministry section in charge of recalls, said it had not been informed of any such plan by Toyota.

The Kyodo report followed others in the Japanese media recently saying that the world’s largest car maker had decided to announce a recall early this week. The company has only said it will soon announce plans to deal with the braking problem.

The American and Japanese governments have received complaints about anti-lock brakes that seem to fail momentarily.

The Prius is the world’s top-selling gas-electric hybrid car.
