O2 Ireland: ‘no plans’ for iPhone price cut

16.04.2008
O2 Ireland currently has no plans to introduce a promotional price cut for the Apple iPhone similar to the £100 sliced off the 8GB model for a limited time by its UK counterpart, a spokesperson told siliconrepublic.com.

While the 16GB model of the iPhone still remains the same price in the UK, customers there can now avail of the 8GB handset for £169 (€209) until 1 June, while the Irish pricetag for the model is €399.

This offer follows the recent decision by T-Mobile in Germany to cut their iPhone price from £315 down to £78, again for a limited time.

Pat Phelan, CEO of Irish telecoms firm Cubic Telecom, claimed that this was Paddy Tax 2 – the first Paddy Tax being the price of the voice, text and data packages for the iPhone offered in Ireland, in comparison to the UK market.

“This is again an example of a totally two-tiered structure that reigns between Ireland and the UK on the telecoms front.

“An entry-level iPhone is now £169 (€209) in the UK and remains €399 in Ireland. O2 have agreed to refund in voucher form £100 credit to all iPhone purchasers in the UK,” he added.

O2 Ireland’s spokesperson said on the matter: “At present, we have no plans to introduce a similar promotional offer. However, as with all our products and services, we will continue to review our pricing strategy for the iPhone on an ongoing basis.”
