Golden Spiders to celebrate blogging, social networking

27.08.2007
Nominations for the Eircom Golden Spiders internet and digital media awards will be accepted from September 3rd for the best of the best in Irish web.

This year, among the original categories including best news, e-business and educational sites will be completely new categories to pay tribute to the rising number of blogging and social networking sites.

There are seven new categories: best social networking site, best use of film, digital animation of motion graphics, best blogging site, user-generated content award, best entertainment and games related website, best FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) site, and finally best political website.

The best blogging site will be judged on design as well as content, and by how useful that particular blog is to its targeted sector based on reader feedback.

The Golden Spiders’ categories from last year were more condensed, with news , entertainment and media in one single category, while social networking was included with community and non-profit sites of whom Trocaire was the winner.

Last year the winner of the prestigious Internet Hero Award was Cormac Callanan, CEO of Inhope (International Association of Internet Hotlines), for his contribution to the tech industry in Ireland, including setting up the Irish European Unix Network which was the forerunner of the internet in Ireland.

Silicon Republic’s very own John Kennedy is among the members of this year’s judging panel.

After the closing date for nominations on September 28th, a black tie event will be held in the Burlington on November 22nd.
