Perlico founder Iain McDonald has revealed his new venture SkillPages has notched up 2m active users since January this year. SkillPages is a free service that brings together friends and social connections to help source skills from “trusted individuals.”

McDonald confirmed the number on Friday at the Dublin Web Summit. SkillPages has so far attracted close to €4m in venture capital investment.

Prior to starting SkillPages McDonald a broadband company called Perlico, which he sold to Vodafone in 2008 for €80m and which had a paying customer base of around 63,000 customers at that time.

Using social media to match people with opportunities

In recent months, SkillPages has gone from strength to strength and the company recently launched a new feature that allows members to create an ‘Opportunity’, detailing what skilled person they are looking for.

Other members of SkillPages can then view these opportunities, get presented with those that are relevant to their own skill sets and/or forward opportunities to someone they know who might be interested.

“Thousands of opportunities have already been created by members of SkillPages,” said McDonald at the time. “These include people looking for skilled people for contract work, full-time employment and for one-off occasions.”

Earlier this year, SkillPages, orginally known as Weedle, emerged as the winner at the Irish Technology Leaders Group (ITLG) awards in Silicon Valley.
