One to Watch series: new animation start-up Giant Creative (video)
Daniel Spencer, producer, Giant Creative
In the third featured start-up of our One to Watch series where we interview up-and-coming start-ups in the science, digital and technology space, we take a look at Giant Creative, a new animation start-up that has been set up by four young artists.
According to Daniel Spencer, producer at Giant Creative, the company was formed when four artists who had met while they were students at Ballyfermot College in Dublin decided to pool their respective skill sets to set up the new venture. Besides Spencer, the quartet includes Ben Harper, Alex Sherwood and Seán Mullen.
Giant Creative has based its animation studio in Dublin and it designs, directs and produces animated content for advertising, TV shows and short films.
The new venture has already produced a short film titled The Last Train, which was selected for the Annecy Film Festival in May. Giant Creative also carries out animation services for companies, such as the Easy Peasy ad campaign for Eurospar that uses 2D and 3D technology. And it has just announced it will be producing writer Terry Pratchett's The Duel over the coming months.
Giant Creative has been awarded €50,000 from Enterprise Ireland's Competitive Start Fund, while it has also recently gleaned another €50,000 from the Irish Film Board as part of its Frameworks award to produce a short film called Geist.
As part of its technology development, the start-up has collaborated with Trinity College Dublin to use some of its software when making its films.
Giant is supported by Enterprise Ireland, the government organisation responsible for the development and growth of Irish enterprises in world markets. Its High Potential Start-Up (HPSU) team provides support and advice to entrepreneurs and early stage companies that are considered by Enterprise Ireland to have an innovative product, service or technology, and have the potential to achieve exports sales and create employment.
