Garda ‘PULSE’ computer system to be upgraded

8 Dec 2010

The computer system that is used by an Garda Síochána is to be upgraded in an effort to make it more efficient and reliable.

The PULSE (Police Using Leading Systems Effectively) system, introduce in November 1999, has been the subject of some complaints since it began as the Association of Garda Sergeants of Ireland and Garda Representative Association criticised it for causing backlogs in bringing cases to court.

The proposed system upgrade comes following criticism from the Inspector of Prisons, Judge Michael Reilly, who investigated the release of a Longford man contradictory to his four-year prison sentence, according to RTE News.

PULSE, which cost €61m between 2001 and 2006, has also been the subject of an insurance investigation over the supply of confidential information to insurance companies in order to settle road traffic claims.

The Department of Justice says work is now under way to amend the PULSE system and impose major improvements.
