Xiam takes top award at Cannes GSM Congress

CANNES – In a major coup for Irish software, wireless applications developer Xiam was named among the winners of the 2003 GSM Association Awards here yesterday.

The Dublin-based company was winner of the Wireless in the Community category for a wireless accessibility application it devised for the West Midlands Police in the UK using the Xiam Information Router product.

The GSM Association Awards have been described as the ‘Oscars of the mobile industry’ by The Wall Street Journal.

Other winners included Japanese handset manufacturer Sharp for its GX10 camera phone in the Technology Innovation category, Vodafone Group for Vodafone Live! in the Best Wireless Application – Consumer; 3G Lab, UK for Best Wireless Application Developer and Commtag, UK for Duality always-on email in the Best Wireless Application – Corporate.

The Irish are well represented at the World Congress with some 16 wireless applications developers parading their technology to Europe’s mobile operator and user community.

In addition to Xiam, they include such well-known names as Network365, Am-beo, ChangingWorlds, Macalla and Aepona.

The GSM Association is the world’s leading wireless industry representative body and its members provide digital wireless services to 777.5 million customers in 191 countries.
