7 career podcasts to enjoy in the sunshine

29 Jun 2018

Who doesn’t love a good podcast while enjoying the summer weather?

In the summer, there’s nothing quite like chilling out in the garden or lying on a picnic rug in the park with your headphones on. If you can listen to something that will help you boost your career at the same time, all the better.

Podcasts that boost your career are also a great way to maximise your commute time. Instead of overworking and trying to power through some extra work on the bus in, why not sit back and relax with a podcast that will help you further your career?

With this in mind, we’ve rounded up seven great podcasts of varying lengths to suit even the busiest worker, as well as the one who wants to relax with an hour-long episode.

Millennial Minded

Average episode length: 20-25 minutes

Hosted by two self-professed millennials, Millennial Minded is an informative podcast that gives advice on everything from dealing with an open office space to disagreeing with your boss.

The unique slant of this podcast comes from the millennial mindset. Research has already shown us that millennials will be the dominant generation of the workforce in the very near future, so it’s a unique perspective on the working world.

It also gives fresh graduates and other young people who are new to the world of work the answers to the questions they have.

Advice to my Younger Me

Average episode length: 20 minutes

Advice to my Younger Me is an uplifting and helpful podcast that is about successful women sending the ladder back down.

We all have different challenges to face in the world of work depending on our age, background and gender, so this one is particularly helpful to young women navigating their specific challenges, with personal stories and advice for women from those who’ve walked this road ahead of them.

Some great advice from this fortnightly podcast includes how to negotiate with confidence, how to feel less time pressure and how to take a career break to be a parent without it negatively affecting your career.

Love Your Work

Average episode length: 50-60 minutes

Love Your Work is career podcast with a bit of a difference, with practical and sometimes unusual ways of working, reaching your goals and achieving success.

Host and bestselling author David Kadavy provides a fresh approach on how to get your dream job and remain true to yourself by interviewing entrepreneurs and creators who have achieved success by their own definition.

Episodes include an interview in roughly 50 minutes, while every other week there is a shorter 10-15 minute edition in which Kadavy focuses on his own advice about writing and publishing books.

Career Relaunch

Average episode length: 30-40 minutes

It’s not always clear which career path is the right one for you. For many of us, you can be years deep in one career before you realise that you’re not doing what you really want.

Career Relaunch is a podcast focused on helping listeners create a more fulfilling career. Host Joseph Liu helps those who are struggling with the need to change careers via the medium of interviews and personal stories from those who have chosen to pivot.

Whether you know exactly what you want to switch to, or you simply know you’re not happy right now, this fortnightly podcast will not only inspire you, but will give you the tools and advice you need to go through a big career transition.

Hey, Cool Job!

Average episode length: 60-90 minutes

A little step away from the rest of the career podcasts on the list, Hey, Cool Job! is a long-form podcast, which comes out roughly once a month.

Host Mary H K Choi interviews a variety of different people in unusual, interesting and cool jobs about the work they do. These range from a war reporter and a creative director, to a celebrity paparazzo and a Japanese porn publisher.

If you’re looking for something interesting and relaxing to listen to, this is a great addition to your podcast subscriptions, while also bringing in other interesting aspects about the workplace as a whole.

Happen to Your Career

Average episode length: 40-50 minutes

If you want to become more effective, find more meaning in your work or just use time more effectively, Happen to Your Career is the perfect podcast for you.

Host Scott Barlow interviews a number of highly successful people about how they found their true passion and made the move towards turning it into their career.

The interviews provide helpful insights and advice for those who are looking to get more out of their career, from reaching out of your comfort zone, being yourself during an interview and landing your dream job.

Stand Out Get Noticed

Average episode length: 30 minutes

For those interested in improving their communication skills, seeking public speaking tips or increasing their impact at work, Stand Out Get Noticed is a great podcast.

Hosted by communication skills coach and speaker Christina Canters, the podcast helps professionals learn how to articulate ideas clearly, speak with conviction and build strong relationships.

This is a weekly podcast that will provide plenty of great advice and tips around communication not just from Canters herself, but also through interviews with others.
