Japanese medical technology firm USCI has revealed plans to establish 125 jobs in an R&D, manufacturing and distribution facility in Ballinasloe, Co Galway as part of a €10m investment.
USCI (Universal Sciences Catheter and Instruments) is responsible for the sales and distribution of a range of medical technology products, in particular interventional vascular products for the Japanese market.
The company is making the investment following a strategic decision to move into the R&D and manufacture of its own product range.
“Having researched a number of potential locations around the world for this investment we decided on Ireland,” said Michael Van Zandt, president and CEO of USCI.
“Ballinasloe stood out as the ideal choice due to the availability of the highly skilled workforce and management, the extensive medical technology expertise in the area and the business-friendly environment.
The company revealed 20pc of the 125-strong workforce will be employed in R&D-related activities with the remainder in the high-level manufacturing operation.
“The high quality employment USCI will provide and its spending on salaries, goods and services will be a real boost to the area,” explained the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheál Martin TD.
“USCI represents another important component in the expansive medical technologies infrastructure in Ireland and continues our aim to broaden the cluster of such companies in the BMW region,” Martin said.
