AMD to cut 10pc of workforce

8 Apr 2008

Microchip manufacturer AMD is to slash 10pc of its workforce globally following a poor quarter.

The cuts will amount to 1,600 workers. The job losses will affect workers across all business divisions and geographical locations.

The company suffered lower-than-expected sales across all business units, it announced, with revenue for its fiscal first quarter expected to come in at about US$1.5bn, down 15pc from the fourth quarter of 2007 but up 22pc year-over-year.

AMD has struggled to integrate graphics chipmaker ATI, which it acquired in 2006, and has lost ground to main rival Intel following delays in the rollout of its Opteron processor.
