Apple sues HTC over patents

2 Mar 2010

Apple has filed a lawsuit against mobile phone manufacturer HTC, alleging the company has infringed 20 Apple patents pertaining to Apple’s iPhone hardware, user interface, and underlying architecture.

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a statement. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”

Internet search giant Google wasn’t mentioned in Apple’s press release, but the firm could be implicated. Google’s Android operating system has been said to be similar to that of the iPhone. HTC originally made smart phones that ran on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system, it changed over to Android last year.

The lawsuit was filed with the US International Trade Commission and in US District Court in Delaware.

A response by HTC has yet to be reported.
