Irish enterprise software firm Cape Clear has captured the largest share of the north American enterprise service bus (ESB) software market for the second year in a row, says Gartner.

According to the latest Gartner Dataquest report on application integration and middleware (AIM), Cape Clear holds 18.9pc of the north American ESB market and has experienced revenue growth numbers of 86.7pc. Worldwide, Cape Clear captured 15.9pc of the market.

The report provides a qualitative look at the AIM market and individual segments comprising that space. Total sales in the worldwide ESB space were $114.8m in 2005 — a 160.7pc growth from 2004, making it the fastest-growing AIM market segment.

The report said: “The introduction of web services and the resulting popularisation of SOA [service-oriented architecture] caused a major upheaval in this market. Before 2002, integration backbones were largely proprietary and many application developers were unknowledgeable about SOA and event-driven design.

“During 2002 through 2004, a new type of middleware, ESBs, came to market to exploit web-services standards and the growing interest in SOA,” the report said.

“The Gartner AIM report is a clear illustration of the strength of the ESB market,” said Annrai O’Toole, chief executive officer of Cape Clear.

“We believe the rapid expansion of this market spurs Cape Clear to improve upon our product even more. Cape Clear relishes the suddenly fierce competition and looks forward to furthering our leadership position.”
