US software and service company Citrix, which has a base in Dublin employing over 80 people, has finalised its acquisition of virtual infrastructure company XenSource.
Citrix already has a background in application virtualisation but this acquisition means that it will now be spreading into the server and desktop virtualisation markets.
These are markets which Citrix predicts will grow to an estimated US$5bn over the next four years.
XenSource’s enterprise technology has been developed with contributions from Citrix as well as other tech players Microsoft, IBM and Hewlett-Packard.
To this end Citrix has reaffirmed its promise to give support to the independent open source Xen community with its Xen project, now led by Ian Pratt, co-founder of XenSource and now one of Citrix’s newest employees.
“The XenSource products, team and culture are a great addition to the Citrix family,” said Mark Templeton, president and chief executive officer for Citrix.
“The combination of Citrix and XenSource brings together application, desktop and server virtualization to deliver more innovation, choice and flexibility to the market, including our installed base of more than 200,000 customers worldwide.
“As application delivery becomes a top issue for IT and the world becomes more dynamic, we find it important to be sure we are providing customers the most cutting-edge technologies out there.”
