Some 20 new technology jobs are to be created by a Cork-based broadband company over the next 12 months.
Enterprise Ireland-backed Mediasat, which already employs 16 people, is engaged in the creation of broadband products that enable people in remote locations to enjoy internet access over satellite at speeds equivalent to DSL. The company has been operating in the satellite broadband market for more than three years.
Mediasat has developed the B-DSL suite of products to provide a complete high-speed broadband service with whole-of-island coverage at a reasonable price. The B-DSL range starts with the Biz package and goes up to the B-DSL Enterprise package, which meets the needs of large multinationals and Government departments.
Announcing the 20 new jobs was the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Dermot Ahern TD who commented: “This attests to an upswing in the market, particularly in the Southwest region, where Mediasat has been particularly active. I hope that the company goes on to be an even more important player nationally in this market. I am particularly impressed with the company’s strategy of targeting the more remote locations and its efforts are very timely in the context of our EU Presidency and the prominent debate about the broadband haves and have-nots.”
Mediasat chief executive, Rory FitzPatrick welcomed the Minister and said: “Due to the unprecedented demand for the B-DSL suite of broadband products, Mediasat will be taking on 20 new staff in an expansion programme to roll out its broadband platform to even the remotest part of Ireland.”
He added: “We are extremely pleased that the success of our products has enabled companies who would otherwise have had no broadband access to get broadband and become global competitors. We are looking forward to the rapid expansion of this market over the next two years.”
