Sales recorded on this year’s Cyber Monday, the online shopping extravaganza that takes place in the US the Monday following US Thanksgiving, have amounted to around US$1.028bn.
Consumers spent somewhere in the region of $887m online last Cyber Monday, which is the biggest online shopping day in the US, and this figure was improved upon by 16pc this year.
“Cyber Monday was a historic day for e-commerce as we saw daily spending surpass $1bn for the first time,” said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni.
Billion-dollar spending days
“The online holiday shopping season has clearly gotten off to a very strong start, which is welcome news. So, while we anticipate that there will be more billion-dollar spending days ahead as we get deeper into the season, only time will tell if overall consumer online spending remains at the elevated levels we’ve seen thus far.”
Cyber Monday’s 16pc growth in sales was driven primarily by an increase in average spending per buyer (up 12pc). The average spending per transaction grew 10pc to $60.05, while the total number of transactions increased 6pc to 17.1m, according to comScore.
Overall spending for the US holiday was $13.55bn.
