An overview of the week in deals in the Irish and global technology sector.

IBM acquires Green Hat – move will reduce cost of cloud testing

IBM’s acquisitions spree is continuing with the technology giant’s acquisition of UK-headquartered software quality and testing player Green Hat. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The move is an important development for IBM, as it will allow its customers to test the quality of cloud software before it is delivered.

Until now, in order to run simulation testing on a software programme, a development team had to construct an actual testing lab made up of both hardware and software.

Using the company’s technology, a virtual test lab can be set up in a matter of minutes.

When the acquisition is complete, Green Hat will join IBM’s Rational Software business.

Glanbia invests €1m in mobile voice technology

The largest branded food supplier to the Irish grocery sector, Glanbia Consumer Products, has signed a €1m contract to roll out automated voice technology across warehouses.

Glanbia Consumer Products has signed a €1m deal with Heavey RF Group to deploy Heavey’s VocalPoint voice technology across two milk manufacturing and three food and dairy warehouses.

Heavey RF also worked closely with Glanbia’s IT team to implement an interface to Glanbia’s SAP ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software.

The installation has boosted productivity in one warehouse by up to 95pc. Stock picking accuracy improved in that same warehouse by 600pc, resulting in a reduction of credit claims by 45pc. Pick speed improved from 160 to 260 cases per hour.
