Eircom revenues fall 9pc, Meteor gains 20,000 customers

25 Nov 2009

Incumbent telecoms operator Eircom has reported a 9pc fall in group revenues to €468 million for the three months ended 30 September.

The group said earnings before interest, tax and depreciation fell by 1pc during its first quarter to €168 million.

Eircom said it had reduced its operating costs by 11pc during the quarter to €300 million, compared to the same quarter a year previous, largely due to reduced labour costs.

The group’s fixed-line revenues fell 9pc to €364 million as a result of lower voice volumes and higher discounts.

The company’s mobile division Meteor reported revenues of €119 million, down 6pc on the same quarter in 2008 due to lower average revenue per user (ARPU).

However, Meteor gained 20,000 new customers during its first quarter, Eircom said. Its total mobile customer numbers stood at 1.046 million at the end of September, which was up 38,000 year-on-year.

However, average monthly blended mobile ARPU dropped 8pc over the year to €36.02, which Eircom said was largely due to changes in traffic mix and new call price plans.
