The social network, which employs 1,000 people in Dublin and this week unveiled its plans for a $200m data centre in Clonee, Co Meath, reported a profit of $1.5bn, up substantially from $701m last year.

Capital expenditure in the fourth quarter was $692m.

For the full year 2015, Facebook reported revenues of $17.9bn, up 44pc year-over-year, and an overall profit of $3.69bn.

Facebook now has an audience of 1.59bn monthly active users, up 14pc on the previous year.

Monthly mobile active users were 1.4bn, up 21pc.

On a daily basis, Facebook has 1.04bn active users, of which 934m access the social network on mobile devices.

“2015 was a great year for Facebook. Our community continued to grow and our business is thriving,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO.

“We continue to invest in better serving our community, building our business, and connecting the world.”
