Social-networking giant Facebook will officially open its Dublin headquarters on Hanover Quay later today.

The US firm announced back in October of last year that it had chosen to locate its international headquarters in Dublin and while the operations are currently up and running, the official opening by the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mary Coughlan TD is due to take place today.

Facebook has made Dublin the centre for its international operations and from there provides a range of online technical, sales and operations support to Facebook’s users and customers across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The company employs 1,000 people worldwide, including around 50 people in Dublin at present.

In recent months, Russian investment group Sky Technologies paid US$200 million for a 2pc stake in the social-networking firm, valuing it at US$10 billion and bringing its total investment raised to date to US$600 million. Software giant Microsoft also has a 1.6pc stake in Facebook.
