Sales of Apple’s iPhone 4S smartphone have been cancelled in Beijing and Shanghai after angry crowds frustrated by scalpers caused a near riot and pelted Apple’s stores in the cities with eggs.

Hundreds of would-be iPhone 4S owners waited overnight outside Apple stores in Beijing and Shanghai in freezing cold conditions for a chance to buy the prized device.

However, platoons of migrants hired by scalpers who wanted to buy the devices in volume and then sell them for higher prices got there first.

Fearing for the safety of the crowd, Apple decided not to sell the device in their stores and will instead sell it through its website and various carrier partners.

Incensed, the crowd turned violent, some began hurling eggs and Chinese riot police were brought into calm the situation.
