Galaxy smartphone sales usher in stellar US$7.3bn Q3 profits for Samsung

5 Oct 2012

Korean technology giant Samsung has reported profits of US$7.3bn largely driven by sales of smart TVs and Galaxy smartphones. However, maintaining four consecutive quarters for the company amid unprecedented marketing spending may result in a weak Q4 for the company.

Third-quarter sales totalled 52trn won, higher than the estimated 51.6trn won, and up 26pc year-on-year.

It is estimated that Samsung shipped more than 57m smartphones in the third quarter, up 7m on the previous quarter.

Sales of the Galaxy S III exceeded 20m units in the first 100 days after it was launched in May.

The company is believed to have spent US$2.7bn on marketing in the third quarter around the London Olympic Games.

However, four consecutive quarters of unparallelled growth may be hard to maintain and analysts are expecting the fourth quarter to be tougher for the tech giant.
