The iPhone 6 has become the fastest selling version of the device ever after Apple moved over 10 million units in the first weekend since the product’s release.
Although the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are not available in Ireland until 26 September, the new phone went on sale in a number of countries last Friday, including the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico and Singapore.
“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a statement.
“We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.”
Apple had previously reported that some 4m iPhone 6 devices were purchased in first day pre-orders, meaning demand for the new phones exceeded initial pre-order supply.
Last week, Vodafone and Three confirmed price plans for the device. The iPhone 6 will be available through Vodafone from €49.99 with the iPhone 6 Plus starting at €149.99. With Three, prices start at €179. Both operator’s deals depend heavily on a customer’s agreed contract.
The device comes with a new A8 processor – 84 times faster than the processor that was included in the very first iPhone.
