Join together on Ethernet, demands Keogh

Deploying fibre-like telecoms services over copper will have major implications in markets like Ireland claims the head of Colt Telecom in Ireland. He has also called on operators to form effective interconnects to allow the market to grow.

“For Ethernet to become ubiquitous in the same way as the internet or traditional voice networks, we need to agree not just the technical aspects but also the commercial aspects, policies and rules involved,” the managing director of COLT Telecom Ireland, Gary Keogh commented.

“The service provider community needs to agree these aspects together and the vendors need to factor interconnection into product development,” he said.

In the past week COLT picked up the Metro Etherent Forum’s EMEA Ethernet Service Provider of the Year Award for the third year running for a deployment of “Ethernet in the First Mile” technology at unbundled exchanges in Dublin, France and Belgium.

The Ethernet in the First Mile Technology used by COLT allows businesses who depend on copper connections to enjoy higher speed “fibre-like” telecoms services.

“The development of Ethernet technology, and customer demand for it, are growing rapidly. In the past year we have successfully expanded our Ethernet portfolio, feature-set and customer base,” Keogh explained.

“As we deploy our next generation network platform, we will be able to enhance these services still further with faster provisioning times, greater flexibility and new features for customers,” Keogh said.
