Motorola in discussions
with Cork workers

Mobile phone giant Motorola, which employs 500 people in its Cork operation, has confirmed that it has entered into discussions with some of its staff. However, it would not confirm whether or not 150 jobs would be lost at the software development and research and development operation.

It has emerged that 150 workers’ jobs are on the line at the operation as part of a global rationalisation programme at the company.

Motorola employs 500 people at the Mahon, Co Cork operation across a number of roles and a further 10 people in sales and marketing in Dublin.

The company has already announced job losses in the US in recent weeks.

In a carefully worded statement Motorola said: “Motorola is in discussions with some of its staff in Cork regarding future business requirements at the site.

“No decisions have been made at this stage and as always we are committed to communicating with our staff first and will not comment on rumour or speculations.”
