Navteq pushes to 3D with PixelActive purchase

17 Nov 2010

Navteq has made a big step towards accelerating its 2D mapping into 3D by acquiring PixelActive, developers of 3D urban modelling tools.

Navteq, which offers maps, traffic and location data enabling navigation and location-based services, wishes to leverage 3D technologies through this purchase.

The founders of PixelActive, Steve Rotenberg and Michael Kelley, will stay with the company and continue their roles in the R&D organisation.

PixelActive is based in California and has 16 employees. The company develops tools and technologies for 3D modelling of road networks, buildings and terrain.

Navteq has utilised its Cityscape product before, while developing offerings such as 3D Junction Objects and 3D City Models.

This acquisition will see Navteq develop its strategy towards expanding its 2D mapping to 3D, to allow it to remain competitive in this area.

“Future developments in navigation and other location-enabled solutions will rely heavily on 3D mapping capabilities,” said Cliff Fox, executive vice-president, Navteq Maps.

“Putting this critical product architecture in place will provide a foundation for the rapid creation of 3D content and keep Navteq at the forefront of the industry.”
