Nokia virtual reality project to pull company out of the grave?

As rumours fly that Nokia is set to enter the virtual reality arena, Sony - whose VR headset is pictured here - and other tech giants will be direct competitors

Virtual reality has become a key battleground for competing tech companies, and Nokia may be set to enter the fray.

According to an unconfirmed report on Re/code, Nokia plans to unveil a new virtual reality project next week at a VIP event in Los Angeles.

It is believed that the project has been developed by Nokia Technologies, Nokia’s advanced product group, which focuses on m aking innovations in the core technologies behind the ‘programmable world’. Nokia Technologies is one of the few Nokia subsidiaries that was not included in the 2013 sale to Microsoft.

Nokia refuses to confirm or deny whether a virtual reality announcement is on the cards. A spokesperson told Re/code that the company does not comment on rumours or speculation.

If true, however, the Finnish company would join the innumerable ranks of those making strides in the virtual reality sphere.

Fellow tech giants Facebook, Google, HTC and Sony are all currently developing virtual reality products.

Following this month’s announcements of major job losses in Microsoft’s smartphone division, and the cessation of Nokia smartphone production (though Nokia Technologies has hinted at a resurrection of mobile development), can a foray into virtual reality pull the former heavyweight back from the brink?

That remains to be seen.
