Spotify to launch video service on Android devices

25 Jan 2016

Just like with Spotify's audio service, users who don't pay a subscription will have to watch ads

Streaming music player Spotify is to start showing video from third-party partners on Android devices from this week, followed by iOS devices next week.

The new video service will only be available at first to users in the US, UK, Germany and Sweden, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Spotify, which acquired Irish music discovery service Soundwave last week for an undisclosed sum, has forged media partnership deals with the BBC, ESPN, Vice Media, Comedy Central and Maker Studios.

The streaming platform has been testing video over the last several months, including short comedy clips, and plans are afoot to create original music video content.

It is understood that eventually all users will have access to the new Spotify video service.

However, those who don’t pay a monthly subscription will be required to view ads.

There has been no mention of whether the video service will be available within Spotify’s web interface.
