Training more important than pay to Irish IT workers

31 Jan 2008

Irish IT workers are more interested in training opportunities than pay rises, a new survey has found.

When asked ‘what advice they would give their senior IT managers on retaining staff in 2008’, 48pc of respondents said they would like more training while 33pc said they would advise a pay rise.

Over 6,000 Irish IT professionals were canvassed by ComputerJobs.ie.

“The message is clear that continued professional development must be a high priority in 2008 for Irish IT companies, both blue chip and SME’s, if they want to retain valuable staff,” said Niall Kelly, director, ComputerJobs.ie.

Half of all respondents rated their senior IT managers’ management skills as “fair to middling and could do better”, the survey found.

Some 70pc of respondents said they were confident about the availability of jobs in the IT sector.

The survey covered a cross section of IT professionals from graduates to senior IT managers across all disciplines of IT, including developers, network engineers, QA engineers and IT project managers. Over half were from companies with more than 100 staff members with the remainder employed across small to medium companies.
