World’s biggest smartphone chipmaker ARM acquires Ireland’s Duolog

29 May 2014

ARM, one of the biggest provider of semiconductors to the smartphone industry, has acquired Irish technology company Duolog Technologies for an undisclosed sum.

Duolog is involved in IP integration and assembly for system on a chip (SoC) semiconductor designs. The company’s technology has been used by seven of the top 10 semiconductor manufacturers in the world.

Cambridge-headquartered ARM says that the acquisition will enable it to strengthen its IP configuration and address increasing system on a chip (SoC) complexity.

Almost every smartphone on the planet, including Apple, HTC, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung, use ARM processors as the main CPU for their devices.

The company employs 2,000 people and reported revenues of stg£714.6m last year.

The agreement will extend ARM’s market reach across mobile, enterprise and Internet of Things markets.

ARM will extend the use of Duolog Socrates within its own sub-system design flow.

The acquisition is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year.

Sandyford-headquartered Duolog was founded in 1999 by ex-S3 executive Ray Bulger and also has offices in Texas and Silicon Valley.
