Career memes of the week: freelancer

6 May 2014

This week’s career memes give a humorous nod to freelance workers in the IT sector, such as bloggers, developers, programmers and consultants.

To some, the freelance life holds great appeal – sleeping until noon, being your own boss, and working from home. While those can certainly be some of the perks of working freelance, the fact is deadlines can still exist, the clients you work for are actually your boss at the time you’re working for them, and sometimes you do have to put on a pair of trousers if you’re going to meet a client or head out to complete tasks relating to a particular job.

A major factor to consider when it comes to being a freelance worker is that work may not always be in steady supply. However, the larger network of clients a freelancer builds, the greater the likelihood of continuing to work. This can then lead to a greater portfolio of work and more earning potential.

Freelance workers should obviously have excellent skills in the service they are offering, be it graphic design or writing for online. They should also be good communicators, negotiators, and self-motivated. Good networking skills can come in handy, too, when it comes to finding new clients.
